As the fox pressed his long, brown muzzle to the wire mesh, a rabbit within the hutch grew frantic, thumping the ground with her back legs, before darting into hiding. The thumps made the others in the hutch and the other hutches also hide. Anguished, the fox turned and stalked away, muzzle low to the ground.
Stricken, the doe slowly emerged from her bedding, looking around at the other rabbits. None were injured. She always reacted this way when a scavenging fox entered their owner's garden. The garden only had a low wall, thus making it easy for foxes to climb or even jump!
The doe who had warned all was Tempestas, which meant Storm in Latin. The name suited the black doe, who was marked tan, grey and white. "A storm of colours", the others said. Tem, as she preferred to be called by her friends and family, was the guardian of her hutch; Hutch A. There was four hutches; Hutch A, B, C and D. Their owner's favourite rabbits resided in Hutch A, her second favourite bunch in Hutch B, and so forth.
